Jimmy 'Major' Kennedy (born in Carrigtwohill, County Cork) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Carrigtwohill and with the Cork senior inter-county team in the 1910s and 1920s.

Playing career

Club

Kennedy played his club hurling with his local Carrigtwohill club and won a senior county title in 1918. This remains Carrigtwohill's only senior county title.

Inter-county

Kennedy first came to prominence on the inter-county scene as a member of the Cork senior team in 1912. That year he won his first Munster title following a victory over Tipperary. Kennedy later lined out in his first All-Ireland final where Kilkenny provided the opposition. In a pattern that would repeat itself between these two sides over most of the next century Kilkenny won the game by just a single point. Kennedy added a second Munster title to his collection in 1915 following a trouncing of Clare in the provincial final. Cork later faced Laois in the All-Ireland final as a downpot hampered the play at Croke Park. Kennedy's side lead at half-time, however, Laois went on to win their only All-Ireland title on a score line of 6-2 to 4-1. In 1919 Kennedy was appointed captain of the Cork team and he captured his third Munster title. He later lead his team out against Dublin in the championship decider at Croke Park. During the game Kennedy scored four goals and had two more disallowed, however, Cork still went on to win the game giving Kennedy his sole All-Ireland medal. This was also the first occasion that Cork wore their distinctive red jerseys. The old saffron and blue jerseys had been seized by the British before the game so alternative arrangements had to be made. In 1920 Kennedy won a fourth Munster title, however, in the All-Ireland final Dublin gained revenge for the previous year’s defeat and beat Cork. This brought Kennedy's inter-county career to an end.
