Mitrofan Cioban (born January 5, 1942) is a distinguished Moldovan mathematician, a member of the Academy of Science of Moldova (2000).
Life
Mitrofan Cioban was born in Copceac, Tighina county, Moldova to farmers Mihail and Tecla Cioban. He was the fourth of the couple's seven children. Although completely illiterate, his parents encouraged Mitrofan to get as good an education as was possible at the time. They sent him to a boarding school in the neighboring village of Volontiri. Because he spoke no Russian at the time, he had to give up on his early dream of becoming a ship designer.
At the age of 17 he decided to become a mathematician and was admitted to the Tiraspol University; soon he joined a seminar in topology led by P. Osmatescu. After graduation he went to the Moscow State University for pursuing advanced studies in Mathematics. In Moscow, he joined the Topology Seminar led by Pavel Alexandroff and obtained a PhD degree in 1970. He returned after graduation to Tiraspol. He served as President of the Tiraspol State University (Chişinău) until his retirement in December 2008. Together with his wife Nina they have three children, Antonina, Roman and Mihai.
Work
Mitrofan Cioban has written eight books and more than 200 papers in General Topology, Topological Algebra, Set Theory, Functional Analysis, Measure Theory and other topics. He contributed to solving Hausdorff's problem on Borelian classes, Arhangelskii's problem on zero-dimensional representation of universal topological algebras as well as two Maltsev's problems on free topological algebras.
