William Huggins Brawley (
May 13 ,1841 -November 15 ,1916 ) was a U.S. Representative fromSouth Carolina , cousin ofJohn James Hemphill and great-uncle ofRobert Witherspoon Hemphill .Born in
Chester, South Carolina , Brawley attended the common schools, and was graduated from South Carolina College at Columbia in 1860. Enlisted as a private in Company F, Sixth Regiment, South Carolina Infantry, Confederate States Army,April 11 ,1861 . Lost an arm in the Battle of Seven Pines and was retired from service. Traveled and studied in Europe in 1864 and 1865.He studied law.He was admitted to the bar in 1866 and commenced practice atChester, South Carolina .Brawley was elected solicitor of the sixth judicial circuit of South Carolina in 1868 and served until his resignation in 1874.He moved to Charleston and continued the practice of his profession.He served as member of the State house of representatives 1882-1890.
Brawley was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second and Fifty-third Congresses and served from
March 4 ,1891 , untilFebruary 12 ,1894 , when he resigned to accept a position on the bench.He was appointedJanuary 18 ,1894 , United States district judge of the district of South Carolina and served fromFebruary 12 ,1894 , until his resignationJune 14 ,1911 .He lived in retirement until his death inCharleston, South Carolina ,November 15 ,1916 .He was interred in Magnolia Cemetery.ource
