Richard Stakelum (born 1963) is a former Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Borris-Ileigh and with the Tipperary senior inter-county team in the 1980s.

Early life

Richard Stakelum was born in Borrisoleigh, County Tipperary in 1963. He was educated locally and would go on to play hurling for his native-county.

Playing career

Club

Staelum played club hurling with his local Borris-Ileigh club. He enjoyed some success at underage levels before winning two county titles in 1983 and 1986.

Inter-county

Stakelum first came to prominence in the mid-1980s as a member of the Tipperary under-21 hurling team. He won a Munster title at this level in 1984, however, an All-Ireland medal eluded him. Three years later in 1987 Stakelum was captain of the Tipperary senior hurling team. That year he guided Tipp to a first Munster title since 1971. After the presentation of the cup Stakelum gave one of the most memorable Munster final acceptance speeches as he roared defiantly that 'the famine was over.' He also led the Tipperary supporters in a rendition of Slievenamon. Unfortunately, Stakelum's side were later defeated by Galway in the All-Ireland semi-final.

Management

Stakelum moved to Dublin and is currently the manager of the Kilmacud Crokes minor hurling team. Described by many as an inspirational leader, Stakelum brought the team to Dublin Minor Hurling Championship glory in 2007.
