The Eiskanal is an artificial canal feature in the city of
Augsburg that was constructed as thewhitewater canoeing andwhitewater kayaking venue for the1972 Summer Olympics that were hosted inMunich ,Germany . The first artificial whitewater course of its kind, it has served as a prototype for numerous artificial courses since constructed, such as those inBarcelona ,Spain , built for the 1992 Olympic Games; inSydney ,Australia , built for the 2000 Olympic Games; inPrague ,The Czech Republic ; inBratislava ,Slovakia ; inAthens ,Greece , built for the2004 Olympic Games ; and most recently inCharlotte ,North Carolina . The Eiskanal is still considered a world-class venue, and hosts many World Cup and other international races.
