- Liffey Junction
Liffey Junction is a former railway
station andjunction on the erstwhileMidland Great Western Railway inDublin ,Ireland .The station opened in
1864 [ Midland Great Western Railway; Shepherd, Ernie; ISBN 1857800087; 1994 - p118 ] upon the opening of theLiffey Line from this point to the River Liffey at the North Wall,Dublin . The station closed to passenger traffic in1937 upon the concurrent closure of the line from Broadstone to Liffey Junction, such traffic being rerouted toPearse Station (then Westland Row). The station remained in use until1977 for cattle traffic and afterwards was used as a wagon storage point.Today, most of the features of this station have disappeared. Those that remain include the water tower between the trackbed of the mainline and the
Liffey Line branch (now part of theDublin -Sligo line) fronting onto theRoyal Canal , the down side loading bank and traces of the up side island platform. There is also a water column.There was a carriage shed located between the
Liffey Line and theRoyal Canal . This area remains distinguishable today as a triangular shaped area on the north eastern side of theLiffey Line bridge over theRoyal Canal . TheMidland Great Western Railway 's creosoting plant was also located here.Liffey Junction railway station finally closed on
