- Barlow Baronets
There have been four Baronetcies created for persons with the surname Barlow, one in the
Baronetage of England and three in theBaronetage of the United Kingdom .The Barlow Baronetcy, of Slebetch in the County of Pembroke, was created in the Baronetage of England on
13 July 1677 for John Barlow. He was succeeded by his son, the second Baronet. He represented Cardigan Boroughs and Haverfordwest in the House of Commons. The title became extinct on the death of his son, the third Baronet, sometime after 1756.The Barlow Baronetcy, of Fort William in Bengal, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on
29 June 1803 forGeorge Barlow . He was ProvisionalGovernor-General of India from 1805 to 1807 andGovernor of Madras from 1807 to 1813. He was succeeded by his son, the second Baronet. He was a Judge of the Supreme Court ofCalcutta . His line of the family failed on the death of his unmarried son, the third Baronet, in 1889. The late Baronet was succeeded by his first cousin, the fourth Baronet. He was the son of Richard Wellesley Barlow, younger son of the first Baronet. His grandson, the fifth Baronet, was aColonel in theRoyal Artillery . As of 2007 the title is held by the latter's grandson, the seventh Baronet, who succeeded his father in 1946.The Barlow Baronetcy, of Wimpole Street in St Marylebone in the County of London, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on
7 March 1902 for the physician Thomas Barlow. He was succeeded by his eldest son, the second Baronet. He was a prominent civil servant. As of 2007 the title is held by his grandson, the fourth Baronet, who succeeded his father in 2003.The Barlow Baronetcy, of Bradwall Hall in Sandbach in the County of Chester, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on
20 July 1907 for John Barlow. He was a successful businessman and also represented Frome in the House of Commons as a Liberal. He was succeeded by his eldest son, the second Baronet. *Sir Thomas Erasmus Barlow, 3rd Baronet DSC DL (23 January 1914 -12 October 2003 ). Barlow was an officer in theRoyal Navy . He was the eldest son of theSir Alan Barlow, 2nd Baronet , and his wifeNora Darwin , and the elder brother was the visual neuroscientistHorace Barlow . His maternal grandfather wasHorace Darwin , and amongst his great-grandfathers were the naturalistCharles Darwin , the statistician and civil servantThomas Farrer, 1st Baron Farrer , and the royal physician SirThomas Barlow . After being educated atWinchester College , Barlow entered theRoyal Navy in 1932 as a Cadet. He qualified on submarines in 1937 and during theSecond World War served aboard submarines in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, Indian Ocean and Far East. In 1945 he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. He was promoted toCommander in 1950 and Captain in 1954, and was Commodore ofHMNB Devonport between 1962 and his retirement in 1964. In 1976 he held the honorary position ofDeputy Lieutenant ofBuckinghamshire . Barlow married Isabel Body, daughter of the medical doctor Thomas Munn Body, on9 July 1955 . They had four children: Sir James Alan Barlow, 4th Baronet (b. 1956); Dr. Monica Anne Barlow (b. 1958); Philip Thomas Barlow (b. 1960); Teresa Mary Barlow (b. 1963). He succeeded in the baronetcy28 February 1968 , after the death of his father.
