Cookson began his career with South Shore, and he was a member of the team that won the Fylde Cup in 1888. In 1892, he joined Accrington, and made 27 league appearances in one season, scoring fourteen goals. He left when the club dropped out of the
Football League . In 1893, he returned to South Shore.At the start of the 1902–03 season, Cookson, nicknamed "Gyp", joined his hometown club, Blackpool, making his debut on
September 6 ,1902 , at Burslem Port Vale in the opening league game of the season. In his only campaign with "the Tangerines", he was the club's joint-top scorer with eight goals.Cookson retired from playing at the end of the season, although he remained at Blackpool to help coach the youngsters, living in the town until his death in 1922, aged 53.
