- Lincoln-Way Community High School District
The Lincoln-Way Community High School District was organized in 1951 by the voters residing in the townships of New Lenox, Frankfort, and Manhattan in the school district serves the communities of Frankfort, Mokena, New Lenox, Manhattan, and portions of Tinley Park and Orland Park. There are three high schools within the district: Lincoln-Way Central, Lincoln-Way East and Lincoln-Way North.
Future growth
Each year the Lincoln-Way district continues to grow, gaining an average of 250 students per annum. Both Lincoln-Way East and Central are built to accommodate 3750 students. During the 2004-2005 school year, Lincoln-Way East had a total of 3400 students, with 2700 students at Lincoln-Way Central. At present for the 2007-2008 school year Lincoln-Way East has over 4100 students currently enrolled, which has caused massive overcrowding issues in classrooms and hallways.
On March 21st, 2006, voters approved - by 20% - a proposal to build 2 new schools in the next three years. Lincoln-Way North will open to Freshmen, Sophomores, and Juniors in 2008. North is located at the corner of Vollmer Road and Harlem, serving Frankfort Square , parts of Mokena and Tinley Park. The new mascot is the Lincoln-Way North Phoenix. Their colors are Vegas gold and black. Lincoln Way West will open to the same classes in 2009 at Illinois Highway and Gougar Road. Their mascot will be the Lincoln-Way West Warriors with their new colors being orange and black.
All 4 Lincoln Way schools are intended to have equal facilities. The two new high schools are being built to the same specifications as the two current high schools which boast very similar high-quality facilities. The creation of four separate schools, as opposed to the current two-school system, is expected to provide greater academic and extra-curricular opportunities to the students. Each school will see an enrollment of near 2,000.
