* Hatteras Island is an island in North Carolina's Outer Banks, at the confluence of the Gulf Stream and the Virginian current, a location which subjects the island to numerous hurricanes.
* Cape Hatteras, a key point for navigation along the eastern seaboard. The area offshore, which includes Diamond Shoals, is known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" due to the number of vessels lost there.
* Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, a historic navigational aid still maintained by the United States Coast Guard and the National Park Service was moved 1600 feet from its original location because erosion endangered the structure.
* Hatteras Yachts
* Two ships in the United States Navy have been named "Hatteras". The more famous ship was a gunboat during the American Civil War, sunk—after a 40 minute battle—by Confederate commerce raider "Alabama" under the command of Captain Raphael Semmes. Her wreckage, the property of the United States Navy though the Texas Historical Commission and Texas A&M University at Galveston, rests approximately 60 ft (18 m) underwater off of Galveston, Texas.
