The IBM Academy of Technology was founded in 1989 - modeled after the US National Academies of Science and Engineering. It focuses on the technical underpinnings of IBM’s future. Its membership consists of just over 300 of IBM's top technical leaders from around the world who are working in research, hardware and software development, manufacturing, applications, and services.
Members are elected to the Academy by their peers in recognition of their technical excellence and leadership. Membership is an honor, but also carries the responsibility to engage in Academy-sponsored activities and to promote technical growth IBM-wide.
Mission
The Academy has three primary goals:
*To provide technical expertise to the IBM executive team and thereby impact the direction of IBM
*To provide an independent technical point of view
*To promote communication and synergy throughout the IBM technical community. These goals are accomplished through Consultancies for Executives, Studies and Workshops, Topical Conferences, and other member-initiated activities.
The Academy organization is global and independent. It is basically a self-governing entity with broad latitude to decide which technical activities it will pursue. There is a fine line between independence and irrelevance. And so strong links are maintained to the IBM executive team and to the total technical community.
The Academy focuses on "clear space" opportunities, interdivisional topics, cross-functional issues, and it strives for integration of business and technology strategy. The subjects of its activities run beyond research and development.
