He was born inMünden ,Hannover and was a pupil of Düsseldorf Painting Academy.Champlin p. 353] Chiefly depicting battle scenes, and particularly events of theNapoleonic War s, Northen's most noted works include "Napoleon's retreat from Moscow" and "Prussian Attack", which depict the failure of the 1812 invasion of France byNapoleon and the Prussian divisions of Hiller, Ryssel and Tippelskirch defeating the French Imperial Young Guard, 1st Battalions of the 2nd Grenadiers and 2nd Chasseurs at theBattle of Waterloo respectively.
