radio station inGreenville, South Carolina , and was one of the only three 50kW radio stations in the state, the other two being WLFJ-AM, also in Greenville, and WAGL-AM in Lancaster. On July 19, 2007, the
FCC issued a "STA" which is the process that allows a station to officially remain off the air for up to six months, at the end of which the station must have returned to the air or surrender its broadcasting license. The station applied for another "STA" in 2008. [http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/app_det.pl?Application_id=1195631] . The justification for the STA was "TO CONSERVE ASSETS WHILE PURSUING FUNDING, THE LICENSEE RESPECTFULLY REQUESTS AUTHORITY TO REMAIN SILENT FOR 180 DAYS." WCSZ was known by the calls of WHYZ-AM, signing on the air May 26th, 1966. WHYZ in the 1960s and 1970s had featured a
Top-40 format and later anUrban Contemporary format in the 1980s. The station's main studios were destroyed by a fire in the late 1960s; the station has been broadcasting from a mobile home off of Highway 25 in Greenville ever since. The station went dark in July, 2007, after recently airing
Sports Talk until the early 2000s,urban contemporary gospel , and most recentlyOldies , with the last two formats being entirely satellite-fed.Even though WCSZ is licensed for 50kW daytime, its signal has been plagued in recent years by interference from power lines and poles that were added near the station a few years ago. This and older, out-dated equipment has made WCSZ's signal virtually unlistenable outside the Greenville area.
