The Filter is a client based recommendation engine for iTunes and Windows Media Player that can build instant playlist based on one or more seed tracks. The software can also recommend similar music from the iTunes Store, Amazon and eMusic stores.

In January 2007 The Filter added the ability to automatically sync new playlists to an iPod or MP3 player, these playlists refresh with new music whenever the device is reconnected, thus simplifying the process of filling a portable device.

Funding and Staff

The Filter is a UK based company funded by joint venture capital from Eden Ventures and rock legend Peter Gabriel. They are currently on their first round of investment funding, believed to have been issued in May 2006. The Filter Recommendations Engine

The Filter uses data from its community of music listeners as well as data purchased from Allmusic to inform its recommendation engine.

The Filter as of July 2008

In July 2008 a new version of The Filter website was launched together with a new media player add-on. The add-on monitors and records music played from the local library and uploads the data to the website which recommends new music the user may be interested in.

The website has been extensively updated. Users can now stream music to their computer in a similar way to Pandora (music service) recommending new music based on the users choices. In addition to recommending new music, The Filter can also recommend movies and web videos.
