OBE , FRS (born 20 February 1948) is a Britishastronomer andastrophysicist . He is aRoyal Society Research Professor at the Institute of Astronomy, Cambridge, and Vice-Master ofDarwin College , Cambridge. He became President of theRoyal Astronomical Society in May 2008 [ [http://www.ras.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1465&Itemid=2 RAS press release] ] . He was also Editor-in-Chief of the astronomy journal "Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society ".His current areas of research include
*galaxy clusters ,
*active galactic nuclei , stronggravity ,black holes and
* theX-ray background .He has also worked onX-ray binaries ,neutron stars andsupernova remnants in the past. Much of his research involvesX-ray astronomy and high energyastrophysics . His notable achievements include his involvement in the discovery of broad iron lines emitted fromactive galactic nuclei , for which he was jointly awarded theBruno Rossi Prize .
