Walkers-ABB Electric Multiple Units were the first type of electric multiple-unit commuter trains used by QR Citytrain in South East Queensland, Australia.
History
These were the first EMUs in Queensland, entering revenue service when the Brisbane rail network was electrified in 1979. The EMUs were progressively introduced into service between 1979 and 1987. A freight train derailed and collided into empty sets EMU05 and EMU60 at Petrie in 2001, leading to one set being salvaged from three carriages as EMU60. An earlier accident occurred at Trinder Park leading to one fatality, all units involved in the accident are still in service.
Operation
The EMUs operate on all Citytrain suburban lines in 3 or 6 car sets. EMU01-EMU59 and EMU80-EMU88 have driving cabs at both ends and can either operate as a 3 car or 6 car unit.
Units EMU60-EMU79 have only a single driving cab, and because those units have only a single driving cab, they can operate only as a 6-car unit. They are interoperable with InterCity Express units to form hybrid sets.
Timetable
The units serves all lines in the suburban network. However they are regularly found operating interurban services on the Nambour and Gympie North Line and occasionally on the Gold Coast Line, due to a shortage of interurban rollingstock.
