John Lamb (
June 12 ,1840 -November 21 ,1924 ) was a U.S. Representative fromVirginia .Born in
Sussex County, Virginia , Lamb attended a private school. During the Civil War he enlisted in theConfederate States Army , Company D, Third Virginia Cavalry, and commanded his company for three years.After the war, Lamb engaged in mercantile pursuits as well as serving as sheriff, treasurer, and surveyor of Charles City County. He was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-fifth and to the seven succeeding Congresses (
March 4 ,1897 -March 3 ,1913 ), where he served as chairman of the Committee on Agriculture (Sixty-second Congress). He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection.After leaving Congress, Lamb served as the superintendent of Battle Abbey, a Confederate memorial institute in
Richmond, Virginia , where he died onNovember 21 ,1924 . He was interred inHollywood Cemetery .ource
