Painlevé paradox

Painlevé paradox

Painlevé paradox is a well known example by Paul Painlevé in rigid-body dynamics which, it was claimed, showed that rigid-body dynamics with contact and Coulomb friction is inconsistent. The paradox was resolved (see [http://www.jstor.org/view/1364503x/sp020016/02x0253s/0] for a quick explanation) in the 1990s by David E. Stewart.
