Sybil Bauer (
September 18 ,1903 –January 31 ,1927 ) was an Americanswimmer .Bauer attended
Schurz High School inChicago ,Illinois andNorthwestern University inEvanston, Illinois . From 1921 to 1926, she set twenty-three world records in women's swimming, mostly in thebackstroke . During a 1922 meet in Bermuda, she also broke the men's record for the 440 yard backstroke, finishing with a time of 6:24.8 (about four seconds ahead of the old mark). However, that record was unofficial, since it took place at an unsanctioned contest.Bauer competed at the
1924 Summer Olympics , where she won a gold medal in the 100 meter backstroke. She finished with a time of 1:23.2, four seconds ahead of silver medalistPhyllis Harding . Bauer was engaged to be married to future television hostEd Sullivan , but she died ofcancer at the age of 23. She was inducted into theInternational Swimming Hall of Fame in 1967.External links
