The von Trapp family, memorialized in "
The Sound of Music " and "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers " byMaria von Trapp , fled from the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany and ended up in the state of Vermont. In1950 , a 27-room ski lodge was opened. In 1983, the old lodge was shut down and a new, Austrian-style lodge with 93 rooms was opened. Today, the Trapp Family Lodge has added 23 rooms and 100 guesthouses (guesthouses available through
Timeshare only). The Lodge has a gym, tennis courts, sleigh rides, and many other activities. The Lodge is one of the principal sites for the annual
Vermont Mozart Festival .Cross-country skiing During the winter of 1968-69, Johannes von Trapp, the president at the time of the came up with an idea to start cross-country skiing trails at the Lodge.
