The Buddhist is the first Buddhist television channel for Sri Lanka ["Sri Lanka gets its first Buddhist TV channel", "The Sunday Times", 2007-07-01. Retrieved on 2007-07-01. ] and the second for South Asia. [the first being DMC.TV] It is now available on the Sri Lankan Direct to Home satellite television service Dialog TV. It is possible that the channel is also available free to air on another satellite. The aim of the channel is to telecast valuable religious and cultural programming in the three main languages of Sri Lanka, namely English, Sinhalese and Tamil.
Launch
The official launch of the channel was held on 29 June 2007. The channel was launched by His Excellency the President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva, and the head priest of the Asgiriya chapter in Sri Lanka.

The Buddhist channel studios are at the Sri Sambodhi Viharaya situated in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The equipment and the channel was donated by the former CEO of Dialog TV (then known as CBNsat) Muhunthan Canagey.
The set up of this channel has cost Rs. 65 Million (approximately US$ 600,000). This was a kind gesture contribution by Muhunthan Canagey.
Should some other outsourced party set-up the channel could have been a lot more exceeding over Rs. 100 million (Approximately US$ 1 Million) but due to the fact that Muhunthan Canagey and the teams extensive knowledge in the Broadcast industry made this saving.
This can be considered one of the largest contribution (Charitable) by an individual in the recent past in Sri Lanka.
Programming
The channel will broadcast a variety of Buddhist programming, cultural programming and programming regarding the Sri Lankan Tri-Forces.
