Zegota (band)

Zegota is an anarchist hardcore punk and post-hardcore band originally from Greensboro, North Carolina, formed around 1996-1997. The name alludes to Żegota, or The Council to Aid the Jews, which saved the lives of many Europeans during the Holocaust. In 2000 the group was joined by a bassist from The Netherlands and two years later the guitarist moved to Sweden, giving the group a unique international line-up. Zegota is an example of globalization in hardcore punk. In 2007, their Dutch bassist, Ard, made it known he no longer was interested in the project, deciding instead to focus on his work squatting in Amsterdam. Zegota found a new bassist in Mark, a musical instrument maker and good friend. According to their website they are planning a tour through the Northeast USA around New Year 2008.

In between band activity, the drummer has spent time studying music in Africa and performing with world music groups. The singer has been involved in organic agriculture in the USA, and the guitarist has been living in Sweden, where he is struggling to create autonomous zones with Kulturkampanjen, an activist group based in Stockholm. His short book of memoirs, "Fire & Lightning in Greensboro, North Carolina", was published by Ivory Bell Press. New basist, Mark, is an artist and musician active in Greensboro.
