Rotorua ,New Zealand airport codes|ROT|NZRO.It originally opened in 1963, with a 1378m x 30m tarmac runway, replacing the old Whakarewarewa Aerodrome. The old Aerodrome was just north of Sala Street and is now a suburban area.The present airport has had its runway extended to 1622m around 2002, and has also constructed the runway to the north by 150m [cite web | last = nzherald.co.nz | title = Rotorua gets ready for international flights | publisher = The New Zealand Herald | url = http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/1/story.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10362845 | date = 9 January 2006] , to allow the Airbus A320 to land there. Plans are afoot to further increase the pavement to allow regular commercial jet services to Australia; the terminal building has been upgraded to include immigration and customs areas to allow this. Currently the largest aircraft serving Rotorua is the Boeing 737 400 which is operated by Qantas/Jetconnect on the Christchurch and Queenstown route when the usual Boeing 737 300 isn't available. Rotorua Airport is currently in the process of establishing international flights which several airlines including Pacific Blue, Air New Zealand and Qantas considering services.
