Spandan (JIPMER)

Spandan is the annual cultural, literary and sports festival of the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research, Puducherry, India. It is held in late August and early September and runs over five days. It is the largest medical inter-college festival in south India and has participants from medical colleges all over India as well as from regional engineering colleges, commerce, arts and law colleges. The number of registered participants is around 5000 every year from over 50 colleges.

History

Spandan began as a modest intercollegiate sporting festival between the local colleges in Pondicherry in 1975. A few years later the event was named as Les Jeux and consisted mainly of football and hockey tournaments.

Spandan 2008 will consist of a variety of cultural, literary and sporting events.

Spandan 2007 consisted of:

*Les Beaux Arts (cultural events)Cultural events include Alaap, Tinnitus, Euphony, Dernier Cri, Chorea, Motif and Vaudeville.

*Les Litteraires (literary events)Literary events include Trivium, Loquacity and Graffiti.

The events are :- Debate- Extempore- What's the Good Word ?- Jest a Minute- Quiz- Dumb Charades- Pictionary- 90 seconds

In addition, the daily events include Wall magazine, Daily crossword, Daily quiz, Sudoku

In addition there is a creative writing competition.

The events are conducted in Bernard Theatre and Hunter Theatre in the Institute block.

*Les Jeux (sporting events)Sporting events include Citius (Chess, Table Tennis and Badminton), Altius (Basketball, Volleyball and Throwball) and Fortius (Hockey and Football).

*InformalsInformal events includes the Carnival.

*Professional ShowProfessional events includes the Rock show.

Spandan 2003, the annual JIPMER Intercollegiate Sports and Cultural competition was held from 2nd to 6th September, 2003. This saw the participation of 32 colleges from all parts of India. Over 1000 delegates took part in various literary, debating, cultural events and games. Les litterrairs 2003 witnessed events like What is the Good Word?, Dumb Charades, 90 seconds, Just a minute, Extempore & Debate. The debate was on ‘The concept of God is redundant in today’s scientific world’. All events had good participation and were enjoyed by one and all. JIPMER retained the overall trophy for the literary events.

The cultural events held in the evenings in Lister square covered a wide panorama of items from Indian music to fashion show to various minor stage events. The events often went on till late in the night and kept everyone enthralled, with the excellent sound and lighting providing a suitable backdrop. The overall trophy for cultural was won by Madras Christian College which beat Christian College, Bangalore to the top spot with impressive performances in the musical events, Les Jeux, the games section, saw increased participation in all the events. The host team reached the finals of volleyball, basketball and hockey, but unfortunately lost out to their opponents. St. Johns Medical College, Bangalore, won hockey, Christian Medical College, Vellore, retained its grip on volleyball and first timers Kolar Medical College, made an impressive debut winning the basketball trophy. Overall, Spandan 2003 saw enthusiastic participation from all quarters. The delegates went back home a satisfied lot, vowing to return next year.
