Alfort Smith

Alfort Smith

Alfort Smith (July 7, 1846 — December 21, 1908) was an English cricketer. He was a right-handed batsman and wicket-keeper who played first-class cricket between 1867 and 1880. He was born in Bank Lane and died in Glossop.

Smith's early career was spent with Lancashire, where he made his debut in 1867, having starred in club cricket for Glossop cricket club with both bat and gloves since the age of sixteen. Smith spent a year out of the game and returned to play for Derbyshire in 1873. Smith played regularly between 1875 and 1880 before giving up the game.

During Smith's time at Derbyshire he grew into a reliable stumper, playing against bowlers such as William Mycroft, George Hay and William Hickton. Following Smith's exit from first-class cricket, he moved house, to Fitzalan Street, Glossop, and took employment as a cotton-weaver, along with his wife Mary, a year his senior, and the younger of his two sons, six years his brother's junior. Smith died at the age of 62.
