Kim Youngwoon (born January 17, 1985), better known by his stage name Kang-in, is a singer, entertainer, and a member of Korean boy band Super Junior. He was one of the three MC's for M.NET's "M!Countdown" along with bandmates Leeteuk and Shindong before he was replaced by Eunhyuk. He was also a former DJ for "Reckless Radio" where Super Junior members often visited as guests, but is now replaced by bandmate Sungmin. He is currently a DJ for MBC's "Good Friend Radio" with Taeyeon of Girls' Generation. ko icon [http://web.reviewstar.net/view.php?code=1040&id=54726] March 29, 2008. Retrieved March 30, 2008.]

Pre-debut years

Kim Youngwoon became a trainee under SM Entertainment soon after he won first place on the "4th SM Youth Best Selection Best Outward Appearance" in 2002. Soon afterwards he made a brief cameo appearance in the SBS drama, "A Man And A Woman" in May 2002.

Although originally auditioned to be an actor, he was placed under many all-male project music groups, including the group Four Seasons, a four-member boy band that was to include Kim Heechul, Hero Jaejoong, and U-Know Yunho. However, both U-Know Yunho and Hero Jaejoong soon debuted as members of TVXQ in 2003, ending the Four Seasons project.

Music career

2005–present: Super Junior

After the Four Seasons project ended, Kim and Kim Heechul were then placed in another project group, the large all-male performance rotational group, Super Junior 05, as part of the first generation members in Super Junior. Kim therefore decided to use the stage name Kang-in, which can be loosely translated to "strong but kind person," to show his strength as an entertainer and performer. On November 6, 2005, Kang-in as a member of Super Junior 05 officially debuted on SBS's "Popular Songs", performing Super Junior's first single "TWINS (Knock Out)". The group released their first studio album a month later and it debuted as #3 on the monthly MIAK K-pop album charts.cite news | author= | title=Album Sales of December 2005 | date= | work=Recording Industry Association of Korea | pages=1 | url=http://www.miak.or.kr/stat/kpop_200512.htm | accessdate=2007-10-16 | language=Korean] As the group's second single, "Miracle", came to an end, his talent agency was about to recruit new members for the next Super Junior generation, Super Junior 06, with Kang-in still as an undergraduate member of Super Junior. However, plans changed when the company added in a thirteenth member, Kyuhyun, and the company declared that future Super Junior generations were rumors. The group dropped the suffix "05" and became officially Super Junior. The new group hit big after they released their first CD single "U" the following summer in 2006, which became Super Junior's most successful single in the music charts, leading Super Junior to set #1 records in their music career since then.

In early 2007, SM Entertainment placed Kang-in in a new six-piece subgroup of Super Junior, Super Junior-T. Different from Super Junior's usual urban music style, the group specializes in singing modernized versions of trot, an old style of Korean pop music. On February 25, 2007, Super Junior-T debuted on "Popular Songs" with their title song, "Rokuko". Super Junior-T released their first single, "Rokuko" on February 23, 2007, ultimately selling 45,998 units by the end of the year, ranked as the sixteenth best-selling album of the year and he first best-selling single of the year. [ko icon MIAK.or.kr. [http://www.miak.or.kr/stat/kpop_200712.htm] Retrieved January 24, 2008.] Super Junior-T ended subgroup activities in the end of the year and in September, Super Junior as a whole released their second official album, "Don't Don", which became the second best-selling album of the year.cite news | author= | title=Super Junior, SG Wananbe first and second place in 2007 album sales | date=2007-12-12 | work=Moneytoday | pages=1 | url=http://star.moneytoday.co.kr/view/stview.php?type=1&no=2007121213453100351 | accessdate=2007-12-12 | language=Korean] In the summer of 2008, Kang-In made a comeback as a member of Super Junior-Happy, the fourth official Super Junior sub-unit. Their first mini album, "Cooking? Cooking!" was released on June 5, 2008.

Television career

Five days after Kang-In's debut performance, Kang-in became the MC of M.NET's "M!Countdown" along with Leeteuk and Shindong. The three members stayed as the hosts throughout the remaining year until Kang-in was replaced by Eunhyuk in mid 2006 due to his busy schedule for hosting MBC's "Good Friend Radio" and "Show! Music Core". Kang-in also became the host in two of MBC's popular entertainment programs, "Sunday Sunday Night Dong-An Club" and "Nothing is Impossible". Along with the rest of Super Junior, he has been the host of "Explorers of the Human Body", a Sunday night variety show which premiered on November 11, 2007. To solve questions about the human body, the group performs experiments with their own bodies to answer the questions.

Although active in both singing and hosting, he continuously makes guest appearances in variety shows, such as "Star Golden Bell" and KBS's "Girls Talk." Being active in television, Kang-in was estimated to be the member that earns the highest salary in Super Junior. [ko icon [http://ent.sina.com.cn/s/j/2007-08-16/12231678515.shtml] August 16, 2007. DJ career

He was a former DJ for "Reckless Radio", but has since been replaced by Sungmin and Sunny of Girls' Generation. He is currently an active DJ for MBC's "Good Friend Radio" with Cho Jungrin, who was later replaced by Taeyeon in April 2008.

Film career

Due to Choi Siwon's busy schedule with Super Junior's new subgroup, Super Junior-M, Choi's original role in the upcoming Korean language film, "Sun Jung Man Hwa" was given to Kang-in instead. Acting alongside Yoo Jitae, Lee Yeonhee, and Chae Jung An, Kang-in will depict a high school student falling in love with a woman much older than himself. Musical: "Xanadu"

From September 9 to November 9, 2008, Kang-in, along with bandmate Kim Heechul, will debut as musical actors through the musical, "Xanadu". "Xanadu" was a 1980's musical film starring Gene Kelly and Olivia Newton John. "Xanadu" has also been reproduced to a Broadway musical. Heechul and Kang-in, along with Choi Sungwon, will be performing the same character, Sonny, according to their time slot, and auditions and casting picks will be chosen in a process through reality television.cite news | author=Lee Hyunwoo | title=SuJu Kim Heechul-Kang-in preparing to transform into musical actors in "Xanadu" | date=2008-05-12 | work=Newsen | pages=1 | url=http://media.paran.com/snews/newsview2.php?dirnews=1155314&year=2008 | accessdate=2008-06-18 | language=Korean]

MBC controversy

A time-slot dispute occurred between SM Entertainment and MBC when SM insisted to have Kang-In stay on SBS's "Explorers of the Human Body" instead of MBC's "Sunday Sunday Night Dong-An Club" where Kang-in was a regular host. MBC decided to temporarily ban Super Junior from appearing in any future performances on MBC.ko icon [http://news.empas.com/show.tsp/cp_tn/20071119n12214/ 슈주, MBC 예능 퇴출! Retrieved November 19, 2007.] Kang-in can also no longer host MBC variety shows "Nothing is Impossible" and "Sunday Sunday Night Dong-An Club" until the conflict is resolved. MBC also demanded to receive an apology from SM Entertainment if SM artists should continue to perform on shows hosted by the channel. After Kang-in left "Nothing is Impossible" and "Sunday Sunday Night Dong-An Club", both shows cancelled due to low ratings. Kang-in's radio program with MBC, "Good Friend Radio" continues to air since it is not related to his work conflict. A week later, MBC announced that they invited Super Junior to film an exclusive MBC segment, "Giving Children a New Life" despite their previous decision to ban Super Junior. The entertainment director for MBC claimed that the ban on Super Junior was never official, but just a decision made by the programs' producers.
