Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville from 1924 to 1967. He began to study for the priesthood at age sixteen. He earned aDoctor of Philosophy in 1907 and aDoctor of Divinity in 1911 fromPropaganda Fide College in Rome under his mentorGiovanni Bonzano , who eventually became a Cardinal.He became a
monsignor in 1917, and came to Louisville in 1923 at age 36 ascoadjutor bishop to the ailing BishopDenis O'Donaghue . He became Ordinary Bishop of the Louisville Diocese in 1924, and in 1937, when it became an Archdiocese, he was made Archbishop.During his tenure he worked to expand the Diocese's schools, parishes, and other institutions.
