The following is a ranked list of the highest independent mountains in North America.[For purposes of this list North America is interpreted to include Central America. However only one Central American peak, Volcán Tajumulco, makes the list.] For this list, a strong criterion for independence is used,][This strong independence criterion is used to restrict the list to well-known (and in particular named) peaks. Any smaller cutoff results in a list that includes unnamed subpeaks in the Yukon.] namely a minimum topographic prominence of convert|500|m|ft|0|lk=on|sp=us.
