Revolt of the Suassunnas

Revolt of the Suassunnas

The Revolt of the Suassunnas ( _pt. Conspiração dos Suassunas) was a minor insurrection in the Province of Pernambuco, influenced by both the French Revolution and the Enlightenment. The revolt was centered around a plot to secede Pernambuco from Portuguese rule and to gain the support and protection of Napoleon Bonaparte. The main intellectuals demanding these liberal reforms were José Joaquim da Cunha Azeredo Coutinho, and more significantly Manuel de Arruda Câmara. In 1801, their plots against the Portuguese Captaincy failed after authorities were alerted of their plans. This episode is not often discussed in contemporary Brazilian history, having been overshadowed by the Pernambucan Revolution of 1817.
