The schools are named after a farmer who lent some of his land to be used as a school in the 1840's. Prior to the 1995-6 school year, there were three Gavins: Central, North and South. Central housed Pre-K - 3rd grades, North 4th and 5th grades, and South 6-8th grades. In 1996 a new Gavin Central was built, and consequently the old one was knocked down. From 1996-2004 the arrangements were as follows: North housed pre-K to 1st grades, Central 2nd to 5th grades and South 6-8th grades. In the spring of 2004 many serious structural problems were discovered within Central and the school had to be closed for safety reasons. For the remainder of that year students attended class at the newly finished/not open Lakes Community High School. The following year kindergarten -4th attended class at Lake Zurich High School and grade 5 at South. That year also saw the district's loss of North, also due to supposed "structural problems". The property was sold to the town of Lake Villa for way under price and was fixed up within a few months and is now a community center.Gavin Central was eventually reopened and now houses kindergarten - 5th grade. Gavin South now houses pre-k and grades 6-8. Over the past few years there have been many administration problems and changes within the district. Also, beginning in the 2004-5 school year Gavin cut its band and chorus programs, but there was band for 4th and 5th graders last year.
