Vila de São Sebastião

Vila de São Sebastião, also São Sebastião (Portuguese for Saint Sebastian) is a parish in the district of Angra do Heroísmo in the Azores. The population in 2001 is 1,984, its density is 81.4/km² and the area is 24.36 km². It is located in the southeastern part of the island of Terceira and is connected by a road linking Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória. The mountains dominate the northwest.

History

In 1836, Francisco Ferreira Drummond fought against the idea that would dissolve the old municipality into Angra do Heroísmo. On April 1, 1870, São Sebastião became part of Angra do Heroísmo and changed its name to Vila de São Sebastião.

*Francisco Ferreira Drummond (January 21, 1796 - September 11, 1858), a Portuguese writer a historian and a politician who fought against the disappearance of the old municipality, author of "Annals of Terceira Island".

Vila de São Sebastião has a few schools, a lyceum, a gymnasia, churches and squares ("praça").
