Hussey's coaching career started at Davidson College from 1981 to 1989 where he coached two 20-win seasons (1985-86 and 1986-87) and the Southern Conference in 1986.

He left Davidson to Clemson (1989-92) and then to Virginia Tech from 1992 to 1999.

Hussey was promoted to head coach at Virginia Tech in the 1997-98 season. He returned to Clemson as an assistant from 1999 to 2003. Prior to his death Hussey was a coaching advisor and working at various basketball camps on campus.
