It was built on the campus of UNB Saint John for the 1985 Jeux Canada Games and has a seating capacity of 5,000 spectators.

Canada Games Stadium features a 400m synthetic rubberized track surface, as well as separate areas for long jump/triple jump, high jump, pole vault, discus, hammer, shot put, and javelin. Inside the track is a natural-turf soccer/football field.

Besides hosting university and minor sports, the Canada Games Stadium has hosted national track & field events; international soccer matches (including matches during the 1987 FIFA U-16 World Championship), and two CFL pre-season football games (with temporary seating added).
