The son of Thomas Leonard Gozney and his wife Elizabeth Margaret Lilian Gardiner, Gozney was educated at
Magdalen College School ,Oxford , andSt Edmund Hall, Oxford . He took a BA (Hons) degree inGeology in 1973. In 1970, between school and the University, he briefly taught at a school inKenya .He married Diana Edwina Baird on 24 April 1982 and has two sons; James, born 7 April 1987, and Alexander, born 25 February 1990.
