Petrochori, Achaea

Petrochori, also Petrohori and Petrokhori (Greek, Modern: Πετροχώριον meaning rock village, Ancient/Katharevousa: -ον "-on"), older form: -on is a Greek village located about approximately 6 to 8 km south of Kato Achaia, 30 km south of Patras and northeast of Pyrgos. The GR-9 (Patras - Pyrgos - Kyparissia is to the north. Petrochori had a 2001 population of was 443 for the village and 1,072 for the municipal district. Petrochori is in the municipality of Dymi.

Geography

Petrochori is situated in a plateau area and contains several valleys. The farmlands covers the western and the northern portions and partly contains forests, more forests are in the valley areas, the mountains dominate the southern and the eastern portions of the area. Its main production are fruits including watermelon, melon, figs and vegetables including corn, tomatoes, potatoes, onions, cucumbers and others as well as dairy, livestock, olives and others. The majority of the population are based in other businesses as well as agriculture.

Information

Houses were stone-built until the 1950s and did not surpass modern-style homes until the 1980s. It was linked with pavement in the 1980s. Most of the homes are abandoned today.

After World War II and the Greek Civil War, much of the population left for larger towns and cities especially the nearby Patras. The population decline slowed between the 1981 and the 1991 census, the population rapidly declined between the 1991 and the 2001 censuses.

Petrochori has a school, a lyceum (middle school), a church, and a square ("plateia"), its nearest school gymnasium (secondary school) are in Kato Achaia. Its nearest hospital is the Agios Andreas Hospital in eastcentral Patras.
