Horizontal mattress

Horizontal mattress

Horizontal mattress is a suture technique most commonly used in areas where any artifacts should be kept at a minimum. The knot is parallel adjacent to the wound edge.

Uses

In chest drains this suture is used as "the wound closure" suture as it allows the incisions to maintain their linear shape, reducing discomfort and scarring. [http://thorax.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/58/suppl_2/ii53 - BTS guidelines for inserting chest drains.]
