The Mirror is the seventh song on Dream Theater's 1994 album, "Awake". The lyrics, written by drummer Mike Portnoy, deal explicitly with his then-problem of alcoholism. Many fans consider this song to be a prequel to the Alcoholics Anonymous suite, though it is not part of the suite itself. It is the first Dream Theater song to be written solely by Portnoy, who was to become one of the band's main lyricists in its later years. Prior to this album, Portnoy's only songwriting contribution was to the lyrics of "Take the Time", which was collaboratively written by all the band members and an early version or their epic song A Change of Seasons.
