Indogermanisches Wörterbuch

Indogermanisches Wörterbuch

The "Indogermanisches Wörterbuch" ("Indo-European Dictionary") is an etymological dictionary of the Proto-Indo-European language by the German legal professional Gerhard Köbler. It is based on Julius Pokorny's "Indogermanisches etymologisches Wörterbuch" ("IEW").

Editions

The first edition appeared in 1980, the second followed in 1982. The third was published on-line in the year 2000, in Portable Document Format (PDF). In 2005, Köbler compiled an update including laryngealistic reconstructions, but without assigning a new edition number to it.

Grammar

The book contains a short introduction to the Proto-Indo-European (PIE) language with a phonology and a grammar of nouns, pronouns, adjectives, numerals, and verbs. The grammar is based on the "Grundriß der vergleichenden Grammatik der indogermanischen Sprachen" by Brugmann and Delbrück.Fact|date=September 2008

Dictionary

The dictionary articles start with the main lemma, followed by secondary (derived, alternative, and some ablauted) forms, but without commenting on the structure of the individual forms. A typical article starts like "*ner-, *nert-, *aner-, *h₁nér-".

The dictionary provides translations in German and English and references to the corresponding "IEW" entry. It lists the branches from which the lemmata are reconstructed and gives their reflexes in Greek, Latin, Proto-Germanic and a number of Germanic languages (including Old High German, Middle High German, New High German, Old English, and Old Norse).

Addenda

Based on the "Indogermanisches Wörterbuch", and available from the same website, is a regressive root index, a German–Indo-European dictionary and an English–Indo-European dictionary.

Differences to the "IEW"

*The "IEW" has one article for each Proto-Indo-European root. The articles are sorted alphabetically, but all derived and alternative forms are discussed under the main articles and thus not alphabetised. By contrast, the "Indogermanisches Wörterbuch" is organised strictly alphabetically, with a system of cross references to maintain context.

*Since its update in 2005, the "Indogermanisches Wörterbuch" contains reconstructions with laryngeals. The laryngealistic lemmata refer to the traditional reconstructions.

*Köbler adds a significant number of roots to the "IEW" vocabulary. He also includes material from the Tocharian and Anatolian languages, both of which are neglected in the "IEW".
