James Thomas Elliott

James Thomas Elliott was a member of the US House of Representatives from Arkansas. He was born in Columbus, Georgia on April 22, 1823. He attended attended common schools and studied law. Elliott was admitted to the bar in 1854 and commenced practice in Camden, Arkansas. He was chosen president of the Mississippi, Ouachita & Red River Railroad in 1858. Elliott became a circuit judge of the sixth judicial district of Arkansas on October 2, 1865, serving until September 15, 1866. He also established and edited the South Arkansas Journal in 1867. Elliot was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James Hinds and served from January 13, 1869, to March 3, 1869. he unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1868 to the Forty-first Congress. Elliot was elected to the State senate in 1870, and was appointed judge of the ninth judicial district in 1872 and served until the adoption of the State constitution in 1874. He died in Camden, Arkansas on July 28, 1875 and is interred in Oakland Cemetery.
