James Thomas Elliott (
April 22 ,1823 -July 28 ,1875 ) was a U.S. Representative fromArkansas .Born in
Columbus, Georgia , Elliott attended the common schools.He studied law.He was admitted to the bar in 1854 and commenced practice inCamden, Arkansas . Chosen president of the Mississippi, Ouachita &. Red River Railroad in 1858. Circuit judge of the sixth judicial district of Arkansas fromOctober 2 ,1865 , toSeptember 15 ,1866 .He established and edited the South Arkansas Journal in 1867.Elliott was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of James Hinds and served from
January 13 ,1869 , toMarch 3 ,1869 .He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1868 to the Forty-first Congress.Elliott was elected to the State senate in 1870.He was appointed judge of the ninth judicial district in 1872 and served until the adoption of the State constitution in 1874.He died in Camden, Ouachita County Arkansas, on
July 28 ,1875 .He was interred in Oakland Cemetery.References
