November 14 ,1809 -July 2 ,1874 ) was a U.S. Representative fromSouth Carolina , grandson ofThomas Sumter .Born in
Germantown, Pennsylvania , Sumter attended the common schools at Edgehill, nearStateburg, South Carolina .He was graduated from theUnited States Military Academy atWest Point, New York , in 1835.He entered theUnited States Army as first lieutenant the same year and served until 1841, attaining the rank of colonel.He engaged in the war against the Seminole Indians.He moved toStateburg, South Carolina .Sumter was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Congresses (
March 4 ,1839 -March 3 ,1843 ).He was not a candidate for renomination.He engaged in teaching, surveying, and agricultural pursuits. Connected as agent with the South Carolina Railroad Co..He died on his plantation, "South Mount," nearStateburg, South Carolina ,July 2 ,1874 .He was interred in the private burial ground on his estate.ource
