Lafayette, Louisiana metropolitan area with acountry music format. It operates on FM frequency 99.1 MHz and is under ownership ofCitadel Broadcasting .History
Don Bonin first signed on the 99.1 frequency in the early 1960s as the FM counterpart of
KNIR with the calls KNIR-FM. KNIR eventually became KDEA-FM in the early 1970s, playingBeautiful music /Easy Listening for theLafayette andBaton Rouge radio markets. The format continued through the 1980s and into the early 1990s, when the popularity of the Easy Listening format began to decline nationwide and KDEA went into competition withKTDY with a mainstreamAdult Contemporary format. On
August 24 ,1992 , asHurricane Andrew was making its way towards South Louisiana, KDEA abruptly ended its brief run as an Adult Contemporary station and began to play "American Pie" byDon McLean on a continuous loop. After stopping onAugust 26 and 27 to relay hurricane information, the stunt continued on the morning of Friday,August 28 . At 12:00 PM on that day, KDEA took advantage of the Country music boom that was taking place at that time and became "Hot Country KD99." OnNovember 2 , KDEA changed calls toKXKC .In 2003, Don Bonin exited the radio business, selling KNIR to Radio Maria and KXKC to
Citadel Broadcasting in exchange for KRXE (nowKFXZ-FM ) and KFXZ (nowKYMK-FM ), which he immediately sold to Pittman Broadcasting Services.
