USS Project (AM–278) was a US Navy
minesweeper . She was laid down1 July 1943 byGulf Ship Building Corp.,Chickasaw, Alabama ; launched20 November 1943 ; sponsored by Mrs. Irene D. Jenkins; and commissioned22 August 1944 .World War II North Atlantic operations
USS Project departed U.S. Naval Repair Station,
Algiers, Louisiana ,7 September forLittle Creek, Virginia . En route, she drove offsubmarine "U–518" after it had torpedoed SS "George Ade" 125 miles (230 km) offWilmington, Delaware ,12 September . Later operations for the minesweeper ranged fromPortland, Maine , where she trained with friendlysubmarines in October, toCape Charles, Virginia , where she planted small mines, toPort Royal ,Bermuda , to which she escortedKeawah and USS|Sapelo|AO-11|2 in December.Transfer to Pacific Theatre operations
USS Project continued
Atlantic Ocean coast operations during the first half of1945 but in July proceeded via thePanama Canal Zone toSan Pedro, California . Engaging inminesweeping operations offCalifornia in August, the ship steamed toPearl Harbor the 24th and on toEniwetok andSaipan in September. After stopping atBuckner Bay , she reachedJapan on the 20th. USS Project remained inJapan ese waters in connection with Japaneseminesweeping activity and to make exploratory sweeps in theOmai Saki area.End-of-war deactivation
USS Project was decommissioned,
13 June 1946 atSubic Bay ,Philippines , and struck from theNaval Vessel Register on16 September 1947 . Transferred to thePhilippines on24 May 1948 as warship|BRP|Samar|M-33, and later reclassified as a PatrolCorvette , PS-33. Fate unknown.Awards
