- Bacerac
Bacerac is a town and a
municipality in theMexican state ofSonora . It is situated in the northeast of the state and has boundaries with the municipality ofBavispe in the north, withHuachinera in the south, with the state ofChihuahua in the east, and with the municipalities ofNacozari de García andVilla Hidalgo in the west. The municipal seat lies at an elevation of 1,432 meters above sea level. Most of the inhabitants lived in the municipal seat. The population has been diminishing since 1995 when it was 1,535. The territory once was occupied by the
Opata Indians. In 1645 theJesuit missionaryCristóbal García founded a settlement to which he gave the name of Santa María de Bacerac, which is derived from theOpata language and means "place where water is seen".Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy and the crops are destined to support the occupation of cattle raising, the herd consisting of approximately 10,000 head of cows.
