Tennessee , White earned small amounts of money digging ditches at aged 16, before graduating from Troy High School in 1929 and was accepted at the United States Military Academy atWest Point on1 July 1929 with help from congressmanJerry Cooper . White earned a Distinguished Service Cross, aSilver Star , two Legions of Merit, and three Bronze Stars.
