- System on module
System on Module (SoM) is a computer term and an extension of the concept of
System on Chip (SoC), and lies between a full-up computer and a microcontroller in nature. A SoM solution offers a dense package computer system for use in small or specialized applications requiring low power consumption or small physical size and is in the category of anembedded system .A number of manufacturers offer products which are defined as System on Module. Among those are Advanced Knowledge Associates (www.a-k-a.net) in Santa Clara, CA; BCM Advanced Research (www.bcmcom.com) in Irvine, CA; Embedded Systems (www.embedded-systems.net).
The definition of a System on Module is somewhat varied, ranging from a full-up PC in miniature form to being something of a super strength microcontroller.
One of the things that is common is the idea of SoMs being used to serve specialty applications, and often having vehicle or automation control applications via the inclusion of a
CAN-bus .Also, it appears that some devices also incorporate Field Programmable Gate Arrays [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fpga] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accelerated_System_Design_using_FPGA_Based_System-On-Modules_%28SOM%29]
