Carey was born in
London, Ontario in 1832. He went toCalifornia in 1849 owing to theCalifornia Gold Rush . He later moved toPeace River Country in 1864 before moving south toEdmonton during the 1870s. Once in Edmonton, he founded the settlement's first general store under the name Norris & Carey, which he managed until his retirement in 1894.In 1892, Carey was elected as an alderman to Edmonton's first Town Council, finishing third of fourteen candidates (the top six were elected). He did not seek re-election in 1893, and did not engage in politics thereafter.
Carey died
September 9 ,1908 . He was survived by one son and one daughter.References
