In early 2001 Heakie injured his right medial ligament and retired from competing in BMX events.
Heakie still maintained a strong stance in coaching junior BMX competitors, until November 2003, when his addiction to methmphetamine lead to violent outbursts and general paranoia. This lead BMX Australia to suspend Heakie indefinitely.
The Psychedelic Years
Plagued by misfortune and depression Heakie turned to experimentation with a range of stimulants and hallucinogens.
His first drug experience was with
marijuana in 1998 at age 11, he then progressed toalcohol andLSD in 2000 at age 13, and steadily progressed tomethamphetamine andketamine . Heakie claimed that using drugs "makes me feel relaxed and react faster on the track". It has been claimed that Heakie also used the banned performance-enhancerErythropoietin (EPO), but due to his age and lack of parental consent could not be tested, and hence all doping allegations were dropped.Heakie's need to regain control over his life forced him to admit himself into the Melbourne drug rehabilitation centre in December 2003, at age 16.
Manufacturing career
In early 2005, Heakie set out to work in the vulcanised rubber industry. He created super bouncy balls, which started a bouncy ball craze amongst teens, especially in Melbourne and Sydney. The balls were marketed as Carnage Super Balls, and still sell well at retail outlets and markets. Heakie no longer operates this business due to recent rises in crude oil prices.
Currently
In 2007, BMX Australia cancelled their suspension of Heakie and elected him President of the Junior BMX Club of Australia [ President of the Junior BMX Club of Australia [http://lilydale.bmxa.com.au/] ] .
Despite his dark past Heakie has become one of Melbourne's most influential motivational speakers. Primarily Heakie gives presentations to secondary school students on goal setting, achievement and representing. Heakie has been noted as a speaker who can "speak the language of today's youth".
Phrases
In his winning seasons Heakie often used the term "Ease up turbo", referring to his love of the computer program [http://turbocad.com.au TurboCAD Pro 11] .
Heakie is also known to use the terms “Carnage” and “Brutal” when describing opponents on the BMXing circuits.
Although sometimes disputed, Heakie is generally accepted to have played a crucial role in the establishment and use of so called "shotgun" rules. Peter is renound for the speed with which he can "shotgun" items, tasks or events. "Shotgun good computer next to the heater!" and the classic "Shotgun getting out early today!" are both prime examples of Heakies devastating ability to get his own way, through the power a well executed "shotgun".
