Parliamentary elections were held in the unrecognized Republic of Abkhazia on 2 March 2002. In the run-up of the election, 14 opposition candidates were disqualified by the head of the Central Electoral Commission, Sergei Smyr. In protest, opposition parties Aytayra and the People's Party of Abkhazia withdrew their candidates. As a result of this, government backed candidates stood unopposed in 13 out of 35 constituencies and supporters of the President Vladislav Ardzinba won all of the seats.[cite web| url = http://www.freedomhouse.org/modules/mod_call_dsp_country-fiw.cfm?year=2003&country=2494 | title = Abkhazia [Georgia] (2003) | accessdate = 2008-07-04 | publisher = "Freedom House"] ]The estimated turn-up was 61%.
