As of 2007, he was the president ofBoise State University , former president ofEastern Kentucky University and a formerLieutenant Governor of Illinois (January 14 ,1991 –July 1 ,1998 ). He sought the Republican nomination for US Senate in 1996 to succeed Paul Simon but was defeated in the primary by then-State RepresentativeAl Salvi . Prior to his election as Lt. Governor he served in theIllinois General Assembly for ten years, two years as a representative of district 4 and eight years in theIllinois Senate for district 28. As a Republican politician in Illinois, he was commonly known as Bob Kustra.Education
